Gambia commemorates World Hepatitis Day 2017

On 28 July 2017, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), Medical Research Council (MRC) and other partners commemorated World Hepatitis Day under the theme: “Eliminate Hepatitis". To mark this important event a press briefing was organized for both the print and electronic media to raise awareness on this important but growing public health problem in the Gambia.

20 July 2017, Banjul |  Today marks two important milestones in tobacco control in the Gambia – the official launch by the Honorable of Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Hon. Saffie Lowe-Ceesay, of the National Tobacco Control Act 2016 and presentation by the WHO Country Representative a.i., Prof. Jean-Marie Dangou, of the World No-Tobacco Day Award 2017 to the respective winners –The Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and the National Assembly.

Progress towards Malaria Elimination in The Gambia

An event to celebrate the advancements and achievements in Malaria reduction in The Gambia was held on the 11th of July 2017. Speaking at the celebration reception on behalf of the Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti and, on behalf of the entire UN system working in the Gambia, Professor Jean-Marie Dangou, WHO Representative in the Gambia commended the Government, people of The Gambia, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Malaria Control Programme, health workers and development partners for the extraordinary achievements. “We have come a long way in the fight against malaria in The Gambia. It is time to boost investments in malaria prevention and to support The Gambia to Eliminate and End Malaria for Good. With the required resources, and all partners united, we can transform our common vision into a shared reality” he said in his statement.

UN staff briefed on Influenza A H1N1

Gambia, 4 June 2009 -- The WHO Representative, Dr Thomas Sukwa, this afternoon briefed staff of the United Nations System in the Gambia on the current Influenza A H1N1 epidemic. The second in a series organized by the WHO Country Office for UN staff since the outbreak of the Influenza A H1N1 was reported in April this year, the objective of the exercise was to provide regular updates on the epidemic to UN Staff and to arm them with the necessary information needed for the prevention and control of the disease.

WHO donates blood bank fridges to the health sector

Gambia, 28 October 2008 -- The WHO Country Office this afternoon donated two blood bank fridges to the health sector. The items, worth about US$8000.00, were presented to the Chief Medical Director of the Royal Victoria Teaching (RVTH) by the WHO Country Representative, Dr Thomas Sukwa.
