The Gambia launches national plan to tackle antimicrobial resistance 

Banjul – Two years ago The Gambia carried out an analysis to better tackle the threat of antimicrobial resistance. The analysis, the country’s first of its kind, revealed a rising trend in multi-drug resistant tuberculosis as well as growing pathogen resistance to commonly prescribed antibiotics. Babanding Sabally, Director of National Pharmaceutical Services in the Ministry of Health, explains the measures being undertaken to address this public health problem.

Malaria continues to pose a significant public health and development challenge. The most recent World Malaria Report revealed an estimated 241 million malaria cases and 627,000 deaths in 2020. The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden being home to 95% and 96% of malaria cases and deaths respectively.

WHO and Ministry of Health Discuss Programme Budget 2022-23

Following internal discussions and preparations, the WHO Country Office and the Ministry of Health held a fruitful meeting this morning to discuss and plan for the Pogramme Budget 2022-23.  The meeting was held at Ocean Bay Hotel and was attended by senior management and programme officers from both institutions.

The Gambia Draws the Line Against Malaria & Gears To Eliminate It

Banjul - The Gambia commemorates the World Malaria Day (WMD) under the theme, “Zero Malaria- Draw the Line Against Malaria.” The Gambia is one of six countries in World Health Organization African Region that have achieved the 2020 milestones of reducing malaria cases and deaths by 40% compared to 2015. This was declared at a media briefing held to commemorate the WMD 2021 on 23rd April 2021. This achievement ensues while the country is still fighting COVID-19 pandemic.
