Maiduguri, 20 December, 2022 – "At some point, I lost it,” says Hafsat Naya,* 59, who lives in Jere, a Local Government Area in Borno State, Nigeria. “I was separated from the people I knew. Everyone had been displaced. There were a lot of killings and we could not go to the farm or market because of fear.”

In Borno State, over two million women, children, and men have been forced to flee their homes to stay alive. More than a decade of conflict in north-east Nigeria has resulted in an ongoing humanitarian crisis, with a dramatic mental health cost.

Yola, 20 December, 2022 - In August 2022, 31 years old Mrs Jenifer James, of Mumore community, Tongo Local Government Area in Adamawa State had just returned from the market when she developed a fever. 
“It started with a headache, high temperature, body ache and later rashes all over my body,” she says in an interview, as she describes the agonizing symptoms associated with the mpox (monkeypox) disease.  
Adding to the physical pain from the lesions was the mental stress because she did not know about the disease or where to go for care. 

WHO boosts function of Maiduguri  Polio laboratory

This has hampered operations at the polio laboratory situated at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH). 

Kwara State bolsters strategy to curb Yellow fever scourge 

Ilorin, 13 December, 2022 - Akwai zafi? meaning does it hurt (in Hausa language), asks Abdulafar Ahmed, jokingly as he administered the Yellow fever vaccine to some of the children at Ruggar Budo (a nomadic) settlement in Gwaria ward of Kaiama Local Government Area (LGA), in Kwara State Nigeria.  
Mr Ahmed is one of the vaccinators administering the yellow fever vaccines and other life-saving routine immunization (RI) vaccines to children under one at the nomadic settlements in Kaiama LGA.

Reaching every child with vaccines in communities at risk of polio disease.

Sokoto, 9 December, 2022 - As the traditional head of Gagi community, Sokoto State, Northwest Nigeria, Alhaji Sani Umar Jabbi (Sarkin Yakin Gagi), insists that every child in his district must be vaccinated with the life-saving polio vaccine.

Bringing primary health services closer to underserved people in Gombe state

Stakeholders call for increased access to diabetes education 

Abuja, 15 November, 2022 - Commemorating the 2022 World Diabetes Day, the Nigeria Minister of State for Health, Ekumankama Joseph Nkama, on 14 November, emphasized that increased access to diabetes education among the populace is critical to the prevention and management of the disease.

The minister, in a press briefing in Abuja, said that a large majority of people living with the disease in Nigeria have little or no knowledge of diabetes and its complications, and this has been increasing the risk of developing the disease.

Awka, 11 November, 2022 - In line with the theme of the 2022 International Cancer Week,  Anambra State, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), recently launched an innovative cervical cancer screening and treatment project,  targeting  women of reproductive age across the state.

International Cancer Week, is marked every year and the theme for this year is Bridging the cancer care Gap: Improving Diagnosis and Multidisciplinary Management. In Nigeria, the week was marked from 1 to 4 November 2022. 

WHO donates drugs and medical supplies,  supports flood response in Anambra State

Awka, 10 November, 2022 - The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated emergency medical supplies to the government and people of Anambra State in response to the flood disaster that has severely affected over 600,000 persons in seven local government areas (LGAs).

In Nigeria, 35 states have been devastated by the flooding in 2022 and Anambra state, located in the Southeast region is one of the worse-hit areas.
