Abuja, 24 April 2018 – The Federal Government of Nigeria in collaboration with international donors and development partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), today validated the 2nd National Strategic Health Development Plan. The plan which is designed to provide an over-arching strategic direction for health in Nigeria towards Universal Health Care (UHC) comes at a time the Government of Nigeria has set out its UHC agenda through Primary Health Care revitalization.

Nigeria, 20 April 2018 – The African Vaccination Week (AVW) is an annual event celebrated during the last week of April. It is an initiative of governments in the African region that was initiated in 2010. It is celebrated in synchronization with other WHO Regions and the World Immunization Week (WIW).The aim of AVW is to strengthen immunization programmes in the African region by raising awareness on the need and right of every person (particularly every child and woman) to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. 

Lagos, 18th April, 2018 - A Regional Workshop with participants from 38 African countries and supported by World Health Organization (WHO) on the Global Surveillance and Monitoring System (GSMS) for substandard and falsified (SF) medical products opens in Lagos on 17 April 2018.

Sub-Saharan Africa contributes to over one third of all reports of suspected SF products received by WHO. Antimalarial and antibiotics are the most commonly reported products from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Abuja, 13 April 2018 - The Director-General of the World Health Organization congratulated Nigeria on its commitment to universal healthcare coverage (UHC) and the country’s focus on strengthening primary healthcare centres.

Abuja, 11 April 2018 - Nigeria’s Vice President, His Excellency Professor Yemi Osinbajo says Nigeria should be a priority for the World Health Organization (WHO).
Professor Osinbajo made the request when he received in audience, the Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Regional Directors and other Global Policy Group members of WHO at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on 11 April, 2018.

Abuja, 8th April 2018 - The top hierarchy of the World Health Organization (WHO) will hold its Global Policy Group (GPG) Meeting in Nigeria for the first time from 10-12 April, 2018. 

The GPG consists of the Director-General, Deputy Director-General, six Regional Directors and the Executive Director of the WHO Emergencies Programme. The Group is an internal advisory mechanism to the Director-General (DG), established to ensure the coherent implementation of decisions, policies and strategies of WHO across all levels of the Organization.

Abuja, 28 March 2018 - The 35th Expert Review Committee for Polio Eradication and Routine Immunization (ERC) has expressed optimism that the Nigerian programme is on course to achieving polio eradication with ‘impressive progress’ recorded. The ERC meets periodically to evaluate progress towards the attainment of a polio-free Nigeria. The monitoring body provides guidance to the government and partners.

Maiduguri, 28 March 2018 -  “When I heard the voice of my favourite singer, Fati Niger, on radio this morning, she simply made my day,” says Mallam Usman, a 39 year old year old internally displaced person in Dalori camp, Maiduguri, Borno state. 

“My spirit was elated, and instantly I felt relieved of my worries. But more importantly, I learned how to protect myself and my household from cholera, meningitis and Lassa fever. I was keen to listen more, but the music was cut short. I wish it played on and on and on,” said Usman.
