COVID-19 accelerated response caravan begins countrywide operation

Luanda, 16 April 2020 - A caravan of public health specialists left the capital Luanda today for the regions as the country ramps up COVID-19 emergency response. The team will work with provincial administrative and health authorities to bolster their capacity to curb the virus from spreading further.

Angola honours WHO Representative at end of mission

Luanda, 22 January 2020 - In a ceremony held in the  capital Luanda under the leadership of the Minister of Health, Silvia Lutucuta, members of Government and health sector partners paid tribute to Dr. Hernando Agudelo, World Health Organization’s (WHO)s outgoing representative in Angola.
For seven years as WHO country representative, Hernando Agudelo successfully led programmes to support the Government of this country to strengthen universal access to health as well as response to outbreaks notably cholera, yellow fever, polio and measles.

WHO supports Angola’s Government efforts to end polio outbreak

Luanda, 3 December 2019 – The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are supporting the efforts of the Angolan Government to end a polio outbreak that started in May this year. Polio is a viral disease, that is transmitted from person to person, mainly through a faecal-oral route or, less frequently, through contaminated water or food, and multiplies inside the intestines.

Angola conducts review and validation of data on Neglected Tropical Diseases

Luanda, October 9, 2019 - The Angolan Ministry of Health, with technical support from WHO, carried out a data review and validation of five key Neglected Tropical Diseases. namely lymphatic filariasis (LF), onchocerciasis (Onco), schistosomiasis (SCH), geohelminthiasis or soil-borne helminths (HTS) and trachoma

The process will allow the country to identify the magnitude of neglected diseases, monitor ongoing prevention and control efforts, and determine the actions needed to achieve the control and elimination of NTDs in the country.

Regional experts discussed how to improve reporting on Tobacco Control

Luanda, 22nd June 2017 - Experts from six African countries which are signatories of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and representatives from the convention secretariat gathered in Luanda, from 20-22 June,  to strengthen reporting on its implementation. This meeting is a joint initiative of the FCTC, the WHO Regional Office for Africa and the Government of Angola.

Controlling the Marburg outbreak in Angola

The WHO Regional Office for Africa has been leading the international field team supporting national and local experts in Angola to control the largest ever recorded outbreak of Marburg haemorrhagic fever. Marburg fever is a rare but fatal disease caused by a virus from the same family as the Ebola virus. While the outbreak appears to be declining, potential cases continue to be investigated and vigilance remains high.
