WHO Tanzania welcomes New Country Representative, Dr Alex Gasasira

The World Health Organization (WHO) Tanzania has welcomed Dr Alex Gasasira as its new Country Representative, following official endorsement by the Government of Tanzania. Dr. Gasasira will lead WHO’s health programmes in Tanzania, supporting national priorities and the UN system’s contribution to achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Gasasira is a distinguished public health physician with over 20 years of experience in epidemic response, health systems strengthening, and public health leadership. He has held senior roles within WHO at country, regional, and headquarters levels, including as Representative ad interim to Nigeria, WHO Representative to Zimbabwe (2018–2022), WHO Representative to Liberia (2015–2018), and Director of the Office of the WHO Regional Director for Africa (2023–2025). Before this current role, he was the acting Representative of WHO Nigeria.

Recognized for driving organizational change and capacity building, Dr. Gasasira has co-authored over 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals and received awards for his contributions to health equity, emergency response, and immunization leadership. 

Dr. Gasasira’s appointment reinforces WHO Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening health systems, improving health outcomes, and advancing Universal Health Coverage in partnership with the Government and stakeholders.
