Kaduna, 25th August, 2014 - Nigeria's stride towards Polio eradication quickened recently as a result of targeted activities in reaching children hitherto underserved with polio vaccine at key inter-state borders in Northern Nigeria. In concert with five other polio high-risk states, polio teams from six (6) border LGAs visited 168 border settlements immunized 26,749  children with Oral Polio Vaccine in Kaduna State alone, during the August, 2014 campaign.

Intense surveillance in Kambia, Sierra Leone, has revealed around 75% of deaths have been occurring in children under 5. Even though Ebola transmission was halted in Kambia last month, mothers still are afraid of Ebola and don’t take their young children to health centres. WHO epidemiologists are countering misperceptions to get mothers and their children back to the health centres and lower childhood mortality rates.

20 August 2014 -- “Take away the fear, don’t hide yourself. People can still survive from Ebola,” are the lyrics of the Ebola Rap, a song written by Charles Yegba, a Liberian artist seeking to raise awareness about the virus in his community. Charles, leader of the AFROCO music group, is recording his song and creating a video to disseminate his message across Liberia, one of the west African countries severely affected by the Ebola virus disease outbreak.

Monrovia (Liberia), August 2014 - The World Health Organization (WHO) appealed to community leaders in Montserrado county, Liberia, to adopt control measures to stop the Ebola outbreak, that has already claimed 355 lives by killing many among confirmed, probable and suspected cases in the country since March 2014. The epidemic also affects Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, being the highest ever known in number of cases and deaths. 

Harare, 19 August 2014 : WHO supported the Ministry of Health and Child Care to launch the nationwide introduction of the rotavirus vaccine in Zimbabwe amid disturbing statistics of rotavirus diarrhea mortality among children below the age of 5.  Rotavirus diarrhea mostly affects children below the age of 5 and also accounts for 66% hospitalization of children in the above age group. According to WHO 2004 estimates, 527 000 children aged <5 years die each year from vaccine-preventable rotavirus infections; most of these children live in low-income countries.

Lagos 19 August, 2014 - Dr. David Brett-Major of the Global Capacities Alert and Response department of the World Health Organization (WHO) that led the team of experts to successfully treat and discharge the first Nigerian Ebola Virus disease (EVD) survivor insists that usual patient care for any severely ill patient was the practice for all patients at the EVD care center.

14 AUGUST 2014. GENEVA - The World Health Organization (WHO) has reiterated its position that the risk of transmission of Ebola virus disease during air travel remains low.

Maseru, Lesotho, 15 August 2014 - Following a declaration of Ebola outbreak in West Africa as a Public Health Event of International Concern by the Director General of WHO on the 8th August 2014, the Ministry of Health in Lesotho, through the technical and financial assistance from WHO Lesotho held a three day emergency meeting to draw up an Ebola Preparedness and Response Plan.

The African Union Commission and the World Health Organization Urge Member States to replenish the AU Emergency Fund and theAfrican Public Health Emergency Fund to support affected countries

Addis Ababa. 13 August 2014 – The African Union Commission pledged on Wednesday, 13 August, to support the ongoing continental and global efforts to turn the tide against the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria with one million US dollars from its Humanitarian Fund.
