Eight in 10 African countries to miss crucial COVID-19 vaccination goal

Africa is set to miss the urgent global goal of vaccinating the most vulnerable 10% of every country’s population against COVID-19 by the end of September. Forty-two of Africa’s 54 nations—nearly 80%—are set to miss the target if the current pace of vaccine deliveries and vaccinations hold, new data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows.

Juba, 1 September 2021 – The European Union (EU) and WHO establishes molecular diagnostic laboratory in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State to increase testing capacity for COVID-19 and other high-threat infectious diseases.

In light of the efforts to expand COVID-19 testing in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal Region, a Polymerase Chain Reaction (‎PCR)‎ machine and other molecular laboratory accessories have been procured and installed for early diagnosis and commencement of specific interventions for diseases control.

Juba, 1 September 2021 - The African Development Bank has donated two cars to support South Sudan’s ongoing COVID-19 response as part of efforts by the Bank and its partners to ease the toll of the pandemic on vulnerable African states. The donation was made to the Ministry of Health through the World Health Organization (WHO), which is implementing the Bank-financed COVID-19 response project on behalf of the Government of South Sudan.

Juba, 1 September 2021 - South Sudan has begun producing oxygen following the successful installation of the country’s first oxygen plant at Juba Teaching Hospital, set up with funding from the African Development Fund.

The oxygen plant was procured as part of measures to support the country’s ongoing COVID-19 response with a grant from the African Development Bank Group’s concessional lending arm. The project was implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) on behalf of the government.
