The WHO Regional Office for Africa is pleased to announce that the third International Conference on PEN-Plus in Africa (ICPPA 2026) will be held in Tanzania from June 23-26, 2026, in Dar Es Salaam.
This year’s ICPPA will be held under the theme:"Advancing progress toward SDG targets for NCDs in Africa by 2030: Reflections on PEN-Plus implementation; Progress, Challenges and the Future"
- High-level engagement of Heads of State and Government
- Advancement of sustainable financing
- Strategic dialogue on sustainable resource allocation
- Issuance of high-level guidance and recommendations by Heads of State

This video illustrates how PEN-Plus empowers local health workers through specialized training, provides essential resources, and delivers patient-centered care bringing crucial NCD services closer to homes for people living in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa. It calls for sustain efforts toward comprehensive action on NCDs

- Accelerating Implementation of the WHO Global Diabetes Compact: From Commitment to Country Action
- Showcasing innovative projects and initiatives: Implementation of GICC/GPACCM and Women Integrated Cancer Services (WICS) projects in the African Region. Sharing country ex-periences, lessons learned, and best practices.
- Accelerating Progress toward 2030 African Region Mental Health Targets: Discussing strategies to strengthen mental health services, integration with NCD care, and policy implemen-tation, aligned with regional and global commitments.
- Ear, eye, and oral health: Integration of ear, eye, and oral health as part of the WHO PEN and PEN-Plus.
- Sickle Cell Disease. Advances, challenges, and strategies for prevention and control in Africa.
Call for abstracts
Overview
The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa, the Government of Tanzania, and partners of the PEN‑Plus initiative, invite the submission of scientific abstracts for presentation at the ICPPA 2026 Regional High‑Level Conference.
The conference will convene policymakers, clinicians, researchers, programme implementers, civil society, academia, and people living with chronic and severe noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) to showcase evidence, innovations, and best practices that can advance equitable care for severe NCDs in Africa.
This call specifically seeks research and implementation evidence aligned with the PEN‑Plus regional strategy that aims to provide essential NCD services to alleviate the burden of unaddressed, severe NCDs (such as - Type 1 Diabetes, Sickel Cell Disease, Rheumatic Heart Disease, hear failure, severe asthma, severe hypertension) among populations through decentralized, outpatient services and integrated case management in the African Region.
- Opening of Call: Abstracts submissions will open on February 28th, 2026
- Submission deadline: The abstract submission deadline is April 15th, 2026 at 11:59 PM CAT (Central Africa Time)
- Evaluation: All submitted abstracts will be reviewed by at least three independent reviewers
- Acceptance: Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submissions by 30th April, 2026
- Accepted abstracts: Accepted abstracts will be presented as either oral or poster presentations at the 3rd ICPPA 2026
