Communities help drive progress against Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Léonard Djombo still remembers the first weeks of the Ebola disease outbreak in Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Today, he works with families as a community volunteer in Kigonze, a settlement for internally displaced people on the outskirts of Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province. From the earliest days of the outbreak, he engaged with residents to answer the many questions raised by the disease.

Equipping the displaced communities with lifesaving practices during Ebola outbreak

In Bunia's Kigonze displacement camp in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, WHO and partners trained community members in infection prevention and control to strengthen preparedness against the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus. After three days of theory, twelve community representatives put their skills to the test in a hands-on simulation covering handwashing, PPE use and home disinfection.

Mongbwalu, Democratic Republic of the Congo—In a small laboratory at Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's north-eastern Ituri Province, tabletop diagnostic devices hum faintly. Rolled out soon after the declaration of the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak, the machines have drastically reduced testing times, enabling faster, life-saving action to stop the spread of the virus.
