The Work of WHO in the African Region, 2010 - 2011 - Biennial report of the Regional Director

The work of WHO in the African Region during the biennium was guided by the 11th General Programme of Work (GPW), the Medium-Term Strategic Plan (MTSP) 2008–2013, Country Cooperation Strategies (CCS) and the WHO African Region Strategic Directions 2010–2015, whose milestones de ne a set of deliverable results for the Region. Achievements under each of the 13 Strategic Objectives (SOs) are presented in the Executive Summary, under the six core functions of WHO, namely: (a) providing leadership on matters critical to health and engaging in partnerships where joint action is needed; (b) shaping the research agenda and stimulating the generation, translation and dissemination of valuable knowledge; (c) setting norms and standards and promoting and monitoring their implementation; (d) articulating ethical and evidence-based policy options; (e) providing technical support, catalysing change and building sustainable institutional capacity; (f) monitoring the health situation and assessing health trends.
