
Respiratory virus surveillance in the WHO African Region Epidemiological Week 32, August 4 to 10 2025
During Epiweek 32, 14 countries in the WHO African region (WHO AFR) contributed virological data for analysis - Algeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Togo, and Zambia. During week 32, 1,065 specimens were collected, and 852 were tested for influenza.
In Epiweek 32, 115 specimens tested positive for influenza virus (positivity of 13.5%), of which 101 specimens were Influenza A, and 14 specimens were Influenza B. The following influenza viruses were identified: Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 (n = 55), Influenza A (H3)
(n = 30), Influenza A (subtyping not performed) (n = 16), Influenza B (lineage not determined) (n = 1), and Influenza B (Victoria) (n = 13).
SARS-CoV-2
In Epiweek 32, of the 964 specimens processed by 11 laboratories in the African Region, a total of 17 specimens tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (positivity of 1.8%).
Cumulatively from weeks 1 to 32, the WHO AFR influenza laboratory network has tested 49,685 sentinel surveillance specimens for SARS-CoV-2, of which 2,292 were positive for SARS-CoV-2 (cumulative positivity rate 4.6%).
