Polio Environmental Surveillance Bulletin
Environmental surveillance (ES) continues to effectively complement Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance by detecting poliovirus circulation, even in the absence of reported cases. Amid declining resources for polio eradication, WHO is prioritizing cost-saving and efficiency strategies within ES. These include reducing sampling frequency, closing underperforming sites, supporting financially constrained countries, and building local capacity. ES remains a sustainable, cost-effective tool, especially in high-risk and resource-limited settings.
Read this report to learn more about how ES is being optimized across Africa, the strategies being implemented to maintain quality amid funding gaps, and how WHO is working with partners and countries to sustain this vital surveillance system.
