New WHO Representative to Ghana Presents Letter of Credence to Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The newly appointed Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Ghana, Dr. Fiona Braka, has today presented her letter of credence to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, marking the official start of her tour of duty in Ghana. 

Dr. Braka assumes leadership of WHO’s operations and technical cooperation in Ghana at a time of growing momentum towards health systems strengthening, universal health coverage, and health security. In her new role, she will coordinate WHO’s strategic support to the Government of Ghana and partners to achieve national health priorities and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With over two decades of experience in public health, emergency management, and international development, Dr. Braka brings extensive expertise in leading regional health security initiatives and supporting health systems strengthening. Prior to this role, she served as  Coordinator for Emergency Response Operations at the WHO Regional Office for Africa, supporting multiple countries across the continent to respond to acute and protracted emergencies, as well as to bolster their health systems capacities for future health crises.

Speaking at the short ceremony, Dr. Braka affirmed her commitment to WHO’s mandate and partnership with Ghana.
“It is an honour to serve in Ghana, a country recognized for its public health leadership and innovation. WHO remains committed to supporting Ghana’s journey toward equitable, accessible, and resilient health services for all”, she said.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa welcomed her to Ghana and acknowledged WHO’s essential role in the country’s health sector.

“The Government of Ghana values the longstanding partnership with WHO, which continues to deliver critical support across health emergencies, disease prevention, and systems development. We look forward to working closely with Dr. Braka to improve health outcomes for every Ghanaian”, he stated.

Dr. Braka’s appointment marks a renewed chapter in the collaboration between WHO and the Government of Ghana. As the country works to accelerate progress on key health indicators and build resilient systems for future generations, her leadership is expected to further strengthen WHO’s role as a trusted partner in advancing the health and well-being of all people living in Ghana.
