Strengthening Women's Cancer Care Through Integrated Screening in Kenya

Over the past two years, the World Health Organization has been supporting Kenya's Ministry of Health to implement the Women's Integrated Cancer Screening (WICS) program. This initiative combines screening for breast and cervical cancers with common non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and mental health conditions, into a single, accessible healthcare visit. The program is being piloted in three African countries: Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, and Zimbabwe.

In Kenya, WICS is being implemented in Bungoma and Nyandarua counties with a goal to reach 10,000 women. To date, 3,767 women have been screened, with 686 abnormal findings detected, enabling early intervention and treatment. This cost-effective, government-led approach addresses the projected 3.8 million annual premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by 2030, improving both survival rates and quality of life for women across the region.
