WHO Supports Road Safety Legislation Workshop for Regional Police Traffic Officers

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) and Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Road Safety Programme are implementing a 5-year Road Safety Programme (2015-19) that aims at reducing the risk of road traffic crashes in the country. This aims at ensuring that there are good road safety laws which address drinking and driving, seat belts, child restraints and helmets use.

Traffic Police are a nation-wide department specialized in traffic enforcement, which takes care of road safety enforcement mechanism.   WCO supported   legal training workshop to 40 Tanzania Mainland regional traffic police officers.

The objectives of the workshop were to: 

  • Orient police officer on the road safety Decade of Action, risk factors and global perspective on road safety.
  • Orient the police on the current road safety laws based on the five risk factors and any other factor identified to be relevant to identify area that need to be prioritized.
  • Obtain comments from police based on their experience on the challenges they face and legal gaps during the enforcement of the current road traffic laws and regulations that should be considered in the draft amendment bill.
  • Consult the police about the amendment of the Road traffic Act.
