Using Maternal Death Review to Improve Quality of Care in Reproductive Health at Kenema Government Hospital

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation with support from the World Health Organization and International Rescue Committee has completed training of medical personnel in the Kenema Gov-ernment Hospital on Maternal Death Review (MDR) process. The Review involves understanding the underlying factors that lead to the deaths. Each death tells a story and can provide practi-cal ways of addressing the problems.

The MDR guidelines and tools developed in 2010 were used for the training. The workshop participants consisted of medical doc-tors, midwifes and other nursing cadres working in the hospital. The workshop was complemented by a tour of the hospital where issues that were observed to reduce quality of care were discussed and recommendations to improve care made.
