Sierra Leone Commemorated World Malaria Day 2011

World Malaria Day was commemorated in Sierra Leone on the global theme “Achieving Progress and Impact”. A national Slogan “Kick malaria. always sleep under insecticide treated net” was selected to raise awareness on malaria prevention and control. The purpose of celebrating malaria day is to recognize the global effort to provide effective control of malaria. Various speakers from the MOHS and partners delivered statements committing their respective organizations to join hands in the fight against malaria.

While addressing the gathering, Dr Samuel Smith, Manager National Malaria Con-trol Programme said that Every individual has the right to access effective malaria preventive and curative services as close to the household as possible and called upon all concerned to support the MoHS in making accessible these services. LLINs were given out to pregnant women and lactating mothers on the day and a skit on malaria prevention performed by children as part of the continued awareness raising efforts.
