13 September 2013 -- Child deaths in 2012 were approximately 6.6 million or roughly half the number recorded in 1990 when more than 12 million children died. A new joint report, published today, shows that though the trend is encouraging, many more lives could be saved with access to basic health care services.

Brazzaville, Congo -- Ministers of Health from the 47 Member States of WHO in the African Region ended their 63rd session on Friday in Brazzaville, Congo, with the adoption of resolutions endorsing five reports - on women’s health, HIV, eHealth, traditional medicine, the health of elderly people, Rules of Procedure of the Regional Committee and a regional strategy on neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). 

On the 6th September, 2013, the WHO Country Office handed over to the Nyangao Nursing School, two blue trunk libraries to strengthen district health services in Lindi Region. The handing over occasion took place at the WHO County Office premises and was witnessed by the Principal of the Nyangao Nursing school, Mr. Kizito Tamba; the HRH officer from Nyangao Nursing School and WHO Country Office staff.

Brazzaville, 6 September 2013 --The African Public Health Emergency Fund (APHEF) proposed by the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, and endorsed by African Health Ministers and Heads of State,  is now ready to go operational.

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) launched Sierra Leone’s national Policy and a five year Strategic Plan (2013-2017) on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) on 6 September 2013. The documents were launched by the Minister of Health and Sanitation Madam Miatta Kargbo during a symposium on the prevalence and burden of NCDs in the country. In addition a health fair was held to raise public awareness on the major risk factors of NCDs.
