From 23rd to 24th May, the Government of Rwanda, Ministry of Disasters Management and Refugees and Ministry of Health, UN Agencies in Rwanda, namely UNHCR, UNICEF, WHO and other Partners have organized an integrated immunization campaign for children under 15 years in the Burundi Refugees Camp of Mahama, District Kirehe, Eastern Province.

Tobacco products are one of the biggest public health threats and nearly 80% of consumers live in low- and middle-income countries. Tobacco use is estimated to be responsible for 10% of adult deaths worldwide and 3% in the African Region.

Kigoma, 28 May 2015 – As of 16 May 2015, a cholera outbreak was confirmed in the Kigoma region, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, along the Tanzania border with Burundi. Cholera is endemic in the region, but due to a recent influx of thousands of Burundian refugees, overcrowding and poor sanitation, the situation got worse. As of 28 May 2015, a total of 4487 suspected cholera cases have been reported so far. 

The WHO Package for Essential NCD (PEN) interventions provides policy and technical guidance on a core set of essential interventions for prevention and control of NCDs through a  Primary Health Care approach. The interventions that have been selected are evidence based and affordable even for low resource settings. Eritrea was one of the countries selected to test the package as a pilot project.

Maputo, 20 May 2015 - To scale up the cholera response activities in Mozambique, the Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and support from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh (icddr,b), organized a series of trainings to ensure standardized case management and laboratory diagnosis protocols to reduce mortality and unnecessary deaths from diarrhoeal diseases. 

he Adolescents and Young People Health (AYPH) is one of the priorities of Government of Eritrea. The Adolescents and Young People (10 to 24 years) constitutes one third or 33.3% of the Eritrean population. To fulfill their health need the Eritrean Government has endorsed an Adolescent Policy in 2004 and developed a five year strategic plan recently in August 2014.

Kagunga, 26 May 2015 – The ongoing cholera outbreak in western Tanzania appears to be improving thanks to intensive national and international efforts, but the risk of transmission remains high due to limited access to shelter, toilets, water and essential medical care. As of 25 May, the total number of cases diagnosed and treated was 4408 and no deaths have been reported between 21-24 May.

Today 11th May, 2015 the Government of the Republic of Liberia hosted a celebration marking the end of Ebola outbreak in Liberia at a colorful event held at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, Monrovia. At this event the WHO Country Representative presented the Ebola Free declaration to the Head of Incident Management Team, who in turn presented it to the Minister of Health and Her Excellency the President of Liberia.

Kampala, 26th May 2015:- The World Health Organization (WHO) donated a brand new Toyota Double Cabin vehicle to Naguru China Friendship Hospital to support the hospital’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and Integrated Disease surveillance and response supportive supervision. This was in addition to computers and other Information Technology equipment that were handed over in November 2014.

Monrovia, 26th May, 2015: Liberia successfully concluded a week long integrated measles vaccination campaign for under fives in all the 15 counties. This campaign executed from May 8-14 was launched at the Duport Road Health Center in Monrovia by the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
