When the Tonkolili District reported a new case of Ebola on 24 July 2015, it marked a change in the Sierra Leone Ebola response. A rapid response team was despatched to manage this new source of infection, the first case in that area for more than 150 days. It resulted in a whole village being quarantined, and showed how quickly Ebola can travel and that no district can let down its guard until there are zero cases of Ebola.

Moses Alpha Turay survived Ebola but lost everything that was dear to him. In the space of one month last year, his wife, his two children, and four other close family members all died of the Ebola disease. “My wife and children died at the same Ebola treatment centre while I was still admitted there”.

Soroti, 4th August 2015: The 9th Campaign of the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV&AIDS was launched in Teso Sub-region at the Soroti sports grounds. The First Lady of Uganda, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, who is also the champion of the eMTCT program in Uganda under the Office of the First Lady was the guest of honour.

The United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) was established on 19 September 2014, mandated as a temporary measure to harness the capabilities of all the relevant UN actors under a singular operational crisis management system to reinforce unity of purpose among responders and to ensure a rapid and effective response to the Ebola crisis.

Abuja, 31 July 2015 - Nigeria has joined the rest of the world to commemorate the World Hepatitis Day for the first time on 30 July, 2015.

The 30 July 2015 date was for the culmination of commemorative activities that started on 28 July with mass screening for hepatitis B and C at the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) secretariat followed by a press briefing and official launching of a national policy for viral hepatitis control in Nigeria.

The theme for World Health Day this year is ‘How safe is food? From farm to plate, make food safe!’ At the same occasion the measles second dose for children campaign was also launched. The Guest of Honor was the Minister of Health, Honorable Dr Jean Kalilani, MP.

Abuja, 31 July 2015 - The World Health Organization (WHO), through the DFATD-Canada funded WHO-Human Resource for Health (HRH) Project, officially handed over teaching equipment to health training institutions and scholarships to tutors from Bauchi and Cross River States to support the institutions towards accreditation and establishment of health workforce registries. 

Geneva, 31 July 2015 - Results from an interim analysis of the Guinea Phase III efficacy vaccine trial show that VSV-EBOV (Merck, Sharp & Dohme) is highly effective against Ebola. The independent body of international experts - the Data and Safety Monitoring Board – that conducted the review, advised that the trial should continue.

Ethiopia commemorates the World Hepatitis Day for the third time under the theme “prevent and act now” by expressing strong commitment to fight the viral Hepatitis disease that affects millions of its people.  The commemoration took place on 28 July 2015 at Saint Paul Hospital.

A recent expert estimate shows that nearly 10 million Ethiopians are living with viral Hepatitis and many more are becoming newly affected.
