Abuja, 25 May, 2022 - In response to the upsurge of the circulating variant poliovirus type 2 (cVPVD2) transmission in Nigeria, the World Health Organization (WHO)  has absorbed and strengthened the capacity of 2400  Public health officers to mitigate the transmission of the virus in the country.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has handed over three generators worth UGX 571,220,522 purchased with financial support from the Government of Denmark through Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) to the Ministry of Health to ensure steady supply of power for the oxygen plants and medical response in Gulu, Jinja, and Kabale Regional Referral Hospitals. 

The generators provided are a response to the need observed in the country during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic, when the country was hit hard by the rapid rise in the number of people in need of oxygen.

launch new initiative to reduce road crash deaths
 

Road traffic crashes are a top-five cause of death for Kenyans between the ages of five and 70, and the leading killer of boys aged 15-19.

On the occasion of the 75th session of the World Health Assembly (taking place in Geneva between 22-28 May 2022), His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi E.K. Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana shared Botswana’s health trajectory, particularly in the midst of country’s efforts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The unprecedented Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak of 2014 in West Africa and other recent health emergencies revealed that the IDSR and IHR (2005) had not been fully implemented in many Member States. This necessitated the review of the 2nd edition and development of 3rd Edition IDSR technical guidelines.  Consequently, member states were expected to adapt the 3rd Edition IDSR technical guidelines to their country contexts.   

The Global Fund Differentiated Services Delivery (DSD) Strategic Initiatives (SI) invest in technical assistance (TA) in ten (10) priority countries until 2023, for the adoption of World Health Organization (WHO) recommended guidance, to incentivize increased program quality and efficiency along the HIV testing, treatment and advanced disease cascade, through promotion of best-practices and acceleration of country grant implementation.
