Botswana to be a better place to grow old

Estimated at 43 million in 2010, the population of elderly people in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to reach 67 million by 2025 and 163 million by 2050, according to WHO.
The population of older persons in Botswana is growing and as in most developing countries, the socio-economic development has often not kept pace with the rapid speed of the ageing population.  The proportion of older persons was 6% which was an increase from 5% in 2001 and is projected to be more than 8.5% and 20% in 2021 and 2050, respectively (National Census 2011).

 Screening invention strengthens fight against cervical cancer in Ondo state.

Akure, 28 October, 2022 - When Mrs Olawale Damilola, a 40 years old lecturer, heard that the health facility in her locality was offering screening to detect early signs of cervical cancer, her mind flashed to stories of women whom she had heard died of the disease. 

She immediately booked for  screening at the health facility, one of the ten Primary Health Care (PHC)  centres offering cervical cancer secondary prevention program services in Ondo State, South-west Nigeria.

Mr Daniel Deng Galuak, who worked for WHO as a field supervisor in the Polio programme, was shot dead by an unidentified attacker at a health facility in Bieh Internally Displaced Persons camp in the northern Bentiu city in Unity State, South Sudan.

The sad event occurred on 19 September 2022 during a supportive supervision visit to the health facility where he intended to monitor an immunization session and go through health records for possible cases of polio and measles that needed to be investigated and reported to the next level.

Zimbabwe to embark on mass vaccinations against Wild Polio

Harare, Zimbabwe – Zimbabwe today joins a synchronized multicountry polio vaccination campaign aimed at protecting children against polio. More than 2.5 million children under five years of age are targeted across the country in the first vaccination round. This campaign is part of a comprehensive response to Polio outbreaks reported in Malawi and Mozambique recently.

The Ministry of Health in Uganda in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) organized a guided tour for development partners to the Entebbe and Mulago Ebola Treatment Units (ETU) to assess the state and operation of the centers.

The guided tour involved officials from the Ministry of Health, WHO, and Ambassadors from the different diplomatic corps, including the embassies of the United States, the Norwegian government, Ireland and the British High Commission in Uganda.
