Lusaka, 12 April 2017 - The World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health conducted a joint meeting for orientation of senior officials from the Ministry of Health, central hospitals, University Teaching Hospitals, statutory bodies and National Professional Officers from WHO on Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
WHO/AFRO supports advocacy and orientation meetings on implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in Zambia
Lusaka, 14 March 2017 - Zambia acceded to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) on 23rd May 2008. The Public Health Act of 1992 provides the legal framework for tobacco control in the country. It bans sales of tobacco to minors, prohibits smoking in public places, and bans advertisements in the mass media. Subsequent improvements to this law have been made including the Statutory Instrument 39 of 2008 which bans smoking in public places. However, challenges have been faced in the enforcement of tobacco control laws.
WHO Conducts assessment of Blood and Blood Products Regulation at the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority and Zambia National Blood Transfusion Services
Lusaka, 8 March 2017 - Blood transfusion is a potentially life-saving medical intervention. Blood products such as clotting factors and immunoglobulins are designated by WHO as essential medicines. The World Health Assembly (WHA) 63.12 resolution of 2010 highlighted concerns about the unequal access to blood products, especially plasma-derived products, which may result in needy patients, including those with severe congenital and acquired disorders, failing to have access to quality and safe transfusion services.
WHO Country Office conducts a workshop for orientation of Ministry of Health staff from the Northern Region on WHO’s Business Rules
Lusaka, 25 January 2017 - The WHO Country Office in Zambia is conducting the last in the series of workshops aimed at orienting senior managerial, finance and technical staff of the Ministry of Health on WHO’s business rules from 19 - 27 January 2017.
Zambian government places multi-sectoral control and prevention of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) on centre stage following the 5-9 December 2016 visit of UN Inter-Agency Task Force on NCDs.
Lusaka, 12 December 2016 - The Zambian Government was honoured as the fourth country in Africa to host the Joint Mission of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (UNIATF) from 5-9 December 2016. The objective of the visit by the UNIATF to Zambia was to support the UN Country Team and the Government to scale up the national multi-sectoral response to NCDs in line with the WHO Global NCD Action Plan 2013-2020 and relevant regional WHO action plans.
Zambia launches the first ever National Health Week to stimulate a “Whole of Government and Whole of Society effort” in health promotion and tackling of Non-communicable diseases
Lusaka, 30 November 2016 – The Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, Her Honour, Mrs Inonge Mutukwa Wina officially launched the inaugural National Health Week in Zambia on 28 November in Lusaka. The function brought together government ministries and departments, United Nations Agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations, Community Based Organizations, research and academic institutions, private sector, academic institutions, the media and the general public.
WHO Supports Orientation of Health Institutional Heads in the management of Gender Based Violence survivors
Lusaka, 15th November 2016 - The WHO Country Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted a training workshop for orientation of health staff heading health institutions in the clinical management of Gender Based Violence (GBV) survivors using a multi-sectoral approach. The workshop took place from 31 October to 4 November 2016 in Lilayi, Chilanga District. A total of 42 participants were in attendance. These included District Medical Officers, Senior Medical Superintendents, Medical Officers and Heads of Clinical Care.
WHO Zambia conducts a workshop for Senior Ministry of Health staff on Understanding WHO Business Rules
Lusaka, 14 November 2016 - In order to improve the understanding of WHO Business Rules by senior management, finance and technical staff of the Ministry of Health, the WHO Country Office (WCO) organized a training workshop for five of the provinces in Zambia namely Central, Southern, Lusaka, Western and Eastern provinces from 26 October to 4th November 2016 in Siavonga.
WHO Supports a Workshop on Health in All policies for government Ministries
Lusaka, 14 November 2016 - The WHO Country Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare and the University of Zambia organized a workshop for orientation of government ministries and other stakeholders on implementation of Health in All Policies (HiAP) from 30th October to 4th November 2016. In order to support the implementation of HiAP by member countries, WHO launched a series of trainer of trainers’ program in different regions in the year 2015.
More than 6 million Zambian children to be vaccinated against measles and rubella in a nationwide vaccination campaign.
Lusaka, 21 September 2016 - In its continued efforts to improve child health and survival, the Ministry of Health introduced the Measles Rubella vaccine (MR) in the national routine immunisation system. The vaccine is being introduced through the nationwide preventive vaccination campaign targeting a total of 6,926,757 children aged 9 months to under 15 years. The vaccination campaign runs from 19th to 24th September 2016 and covers a total of 103 districts in all the 10 provinces in the country.
