Botswana Commemorates World No Tobacco Day

31 May 2017, Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana: Botswana commemorated World No Tobacco Day in the copper mining town of Selebi-Phikwe. The commemoration was headlined by the Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness Honourable Phillip Makgalemele, who pleaded with the public to monitor and curb the impact of tobacco on their health, income and social life.

Francistown, Botswana, 17 September 2016 -- Concerned by the persistently high maternal deaths despite the high coverage of key maternal mortality reduction interventions (such as antenatal care, skilled birth attendance and postnatal care), the Ministry of Health convened a high level two-day national summit. Stakeholders in attendance, including MOH, DHMTs, all hospitals management and professional bodies, deliberated on the high levels of maternal and newborn mortality and to propose ways and means to accelerate their reduction.

Gaborone: The WHO Representative to Botswana Dr Felicitas Zawaira paid a courtesy call on the new Minister of Health, Honourable Dorcas Makgato. The Minister appreciated the support WHO continues to give to Botswana and indicated that while she understands the fact that WHO is not a funding agency, she wanted to be assured that WHO support will always be forthcoming when asked for. Responding to a pointed and very relevant question, “So how useful can you be to me?”,Dr Zawaira assured the Minister of round the clock availability of WHO support.

Training of trainers workshop for TB management

Francistown, Botswana, 11 November 2016 -  Botswana National TB Program held Training of Trainers Workshop, in collaboration with the City of Francistown, with the objective of building a network of trainers that are skilled in training methodologies meant to improve TB Programme performance outcomes. These trainers will in turn capacitate District Health Care workers on TB management. This was necessitated by the changing landscape of TB and attrition of current trainers.

World TB Day Commemoration: “Unite to End TB”

Kanye, Botswana - 24th March 2017: The 2017 National World TB Day was commemorated in Kanye in the Southern part of the country under the theme. “Unite to End TB”. This campaign resonates very well with the Post 2015 TB global End TB strategy and seeks to foster strong stakeholder mobilization, high level advocacy and inclusiveness irrespective of nationality, age, gender or profession. The ceremony was attended by community members and dignitaries including members of parliament.
