The WHO African Region continued to face a complex and evolving landscape of public health
threats in 2025, characterized by recurrent infectious disease outbreaks, humanitarian
emergencies, climate-related disasters, and increasing cross-border health risks. Public
Health Intelligence (PHI) remained central to WHO AFRO’s efforts to strengthen early
detection, risk assessment, situational awareness, and evidence-based decision-making
for health emergencies across the Region.
During 2025, the Regional Public Health Intelligence team coordinated event-based
surveillance, epidemic intelligence, rapid risk assessments, humanitarian situation
analyses, and analytical information products to support Member States and partners in
responding to acute public health events. The year also marked significant expansion of
the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) initiative and continued integration
of innovative intelligence approaches, including speech-to-text radio mining and machine
learning-supported signal classification.
