WHO strengthens the Ministry of Health supply chain management system

30th September 2015, Monrovia - The Liberian Ministry of Health is working to strengthen the supply chain management system, a key strategic area of theInvestment Plan for Building a Resilient Health System (2015- 2021). This is to ensure accessibility and availability of drugs and medical supplies at all levels to reduce wastage. To build the county health teams supply chain management system, 15 County Pharmacists and 17 Supply Chain Coordinators have been recruited and deployed by the Ministry of Health.

WHO supported the post recruitment of this team, with a donation of 30 laptops and data modems at a brief official handover ceremony held at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Monrovia on 25th Sept, 2015.

Receiving the donation, Mr. John Linga, Assistant Minister of Administration, MOH expressed gratitude to the World Health Organisation for providing such invaluable contribution towards strengthening the work of the county pharmacists. He noted that this support was timely and in line with the Ministry’s Investment Plan for building a resilient health system.

Handing over the donated items, the WHO Deputy Country Representative, Dr. Emmanuel Musa, said that this is part of the organization’s contribution to the efforts of the MOH to support the County Pharmacists in carrying out their duties effectively and efficiently especially in data management and reporting. He stressed that the computers and data modems would improve the Logistics Management Information System (LMIS), thereby allowing each county to collect information and report to the central level electronically. Dr Musa assured the Minister of WHO’s continued support to the MOH to attain its vision in this regard.

Also in attendance was the Assistant Minister, Curative Services, Dr. Saye Baawo, who pledged the government’s commitment in putting appropriate mechanisms in place to ensure that the laptops are well utilized. He therefore mandated the Director of ICT to institute a security system which will enable tracking of the laptops.

The laptops and data modems were procured under the USAID and World Bank funding support for strengthening essential medicines procurement supply management capacity as part of early recovery from the Ebola crisis.
