Nairobi, 25 October --The first meeting of the Regional Reproductive Health Task Force -- an expert group set up by the WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) to advise it on Reproductive Health issues -- has ended In Nairobi, Kenya, with the adoption of recommendations aimed at improving access to information, services and commodities designed to promote Reproductive Health in the African Region.

Nairobi, 22 October --- African governments and other stakeholders with an interest in Reproductive Health have been urged to go beyond piecemeal activities and embrace comprehensive and coordinated approaches, in collaboration with partners, while addressing Reproductive Health concerns in the Region. 

Nairobi, 22 October -- Kenya's Public Health Minister, Prof. Sam Ongeri, has commended the World Health Organization for responding to the Reproductive Health challenges facing the African Region by establishing an expert body to advise on how to address the problems.

New York -- The World Health Organization and the United Nations Department of Public Information are organizing an exhibition on Poverty and Health: Challenges to Development in Africa at the UN headquarters in New York City on Monday, 16 September. This exhibition will be launched under the patronage of the Heads of State who initiated the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and the UN Deputy Secretary General Louise Frechette.

Sierra Leone is in the midst of its worst cholera outbreak in 15 years. As of 19 September, there were more than 19 000 cases reported and 274 deaths. WHO and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation have established a cholera control and command centre to coordinate the response to what has turned into a national emergency.

Zambia Ready To Vaccinate Over One Million Children Against Polio In This Year's Sub- National Immunisation Days

21 June 2002 -- Luanda, Angola - 21 June 2002: Angola's first, nation-wide round of synchronised, cross-border Polio National Immunisation Days (NIDs) for 2002 will take place from 21-23 June. Targeting over 3 million children under 5 years of age, the Polio NIDs are led by the Angolan Ministry of Health with the full involvement of provincial governments and municipal administrations. Angola remains one of only 10 countries in the world in which the wild polio-virus is still present, while today, Europe is being declared polio-free.

24 May 2002-- An electronic media campaign on Home Based Care for Malaria has been launched in Accra. The national campaign dubbed "He-Ha-Ho" which stands for Healthy Happier Homes is aimed at equipping mothers and care givers with basic skills and knowledge to correctly and promptly manage children less than five years of age with malaria at home. Additionally, the campaign aims at ensuring that chemists provide accurate information and dosage to their clients.

22 April 2002 -- Nigeria requires an estimated budget of about US$ 53.4 million to implement its polio eradication activities this year. The country and nine others, where wild poliovirus is still transmitted, have till the end of this year to stop its transmission, to pave way for eradication of polio and certification of a polio-free world in 2005.

However, of this amount, about US$ 38.4 million has been realised in actual funds and pledges from Government and its Partners in the Polio Eradication Initiative, leaving a funding gap of about US$15 million.
