Conakry, 25 March, 2015 – The Guinean Government with the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated the very first efficacy trial of an Ebola vaccine this week in an affected community of the Basse-Guinée, one of the areas where most Ebola cases are found in the country.

WHO Director General Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland on Tuesday in Harare appealed to donor governments and external sources of assistance to respond "promptly and generously " to the humanitarian crisis facing southern Africa.

"People's survival and sustainable development are at stake. Our actions today have the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives, and to shape the future of this sub-region," Dr Brundtland said.

Brazzaville, 25 April 2003 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) is to provide technical support for the development and commercial production of dihydro-artemisinin, a plant-based anti-malarial medicine reputed to have the highest cure rate for the disease, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr E.M. Samba, has said. 
The medicine is extracted from Artemisia annua, a Chinese medicinal plant which also flourishes in Tanzania, and grown in commercial quantities in the country's Southern and Northern highlands.

WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti underscores that countries should strengthen the leadership and governance of health sectors, should be more innovative in raising revenues from domestic sources and ensuring that all of their populations have access to essential health services, should also improve the quality of health services and the safety of patient and health workers, and build partnerships with civil society and other partners in order to expand access and should invest in district and community health systems to improve their national health systems.

9 August 2012 -- About 41% of pregnant women in Swaziland are infected with HIV, and they give birth to over 17 000 babies who are exposed to HIV. The prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is a top priority for the Government of Swaziland.

The mission of the Sub-Regional Ebola Operations and Coordination Centre (SEOCC) is to provide a platform for agencies and governments to  coordinate their response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa. The SEOCC supports the national, sub-regional and field level response required to end the outbreak.  The goal of the SEOCC is to mitigate the consequences and end the outbreak as soon as possible. 

A profound shift from communicable to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is under way in many parts of the African Region. Globally, NCDs are estimated to kill 38 million people each year and they threaten progress towards the UN Millennium Development Goals and influence the post-2015 development agenda.

The four main types of NCDs are cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructed pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes.

October 2016 - The Regional Director’s Independent Advisory Group (IAG) has unanimously commended the Regional Director, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, for progress made so far in the efforts to transform the Secretariat of the WHO African Region into an effective, efficient and transparent organization.
