Kampala, 12th May 2014 - The United Nations Country Team in Uganda working through the World Health Organization is collaborating with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) to increase blood collection capacity and availability especially in Northern Uganda.

The Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Ethics and values, Dr Mrs Sarah Jibril commended WHO in Nigeria for supporting the awareness campaign on preventing and managing teenage pregnancies held on the 9th May 2014 at the Women Development Centre, Abakaliki the capital of Ebonyi state. The campaign was implemented by Bell and Bridge Crystal Foundation and supported by the World Health Organization, Nigeria. 

The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization has declared an outbreak of cholera in Juba, South Sudan. This declaration follows reports of 18 suspected cholera cases including one death and one laboratory confirmed case on 6th May 2014 of an IDP who got sick in Gudele and was brought to UN House IDP camp following tests conducted by the AMREF laboratory in Nairobi.

6 May 2014, Dakar, Senegal -  More than 75 representatives of national parliaments from health and budget committees, civil society, ministries of health and finance, media and development agencies from Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Niger and Senegal met from 6 to 8 May 2014 in Dakar to build their capacities budget analysis  advocacy for resources to improve women’s and children’s health.

As of 18:00 on 3 May 2014, the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Guinea has reported a cumulative total of 231 clinical cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), including 155 deaths. There has been no change in the number of cases confirmed by ebolavirus PCR (127 cases) since the last update of 2 May 2014, but one additional death has been reported among confirmed cases (82 deaths). There have been 5 new probable cases and 5 new deaths among the probable cases of EVD since the last report (currently 49 cases, including 39 deaths). In addition, 55 cases (34 deaths) are classified as suspected cases.

(Bolgatanga, Ghana, 5 May, 2014) - The Honourable Minister for Health, Ms Sherry Ayittey launched the 10th anniversary of  the Child Health Promotion Week (CHPW) on Friday May 2, 2014 at The Jubilee Park, at Bolgatanga, the regional capital of the Upper East Region. The week is being observed concurrently with the 4th African Vaccination Week. A colourful crowd of traditional rulers and a cross-section of the public was in   attendance.
