Doctors and nurses are the people who immediately come to mind as critical to controlling the Ebola outbreak in west Africa. But there are many others whose jobs are no less critical: engineers, architects, plumbers and construction workers.
Uganda hosts first meeting on strengthening Reproductive Health indicators
Kampala, 10th September 2014:- Uganda hosted the first inter-country meeting on Strengthening the measurement of Reproductive Health (RH) indicators that brought together experts from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and Zimbabwe. This was to share experiences and update indicators from the national level consultations that were undertaken in Nairobi in 2012. The meeting was focussed on identifying the progress that had been made at country level in trying to add important Family planning and abortion related indicators.

Abuja 09 September, 2014 - Every year, thousands of children mostly under five years of age die from vaccine preventable diseases in Nigeria. The National Routine Immunization Strategic Plan (2013 – 2015), stipulates that 40% of the childhood deaths are attributed to vaccine preventable diseases such as measles, neonatal tetanus, hepatitis etc. Some factors contributing to such alarming death rates is inequity in health services provision.
WHO South Sudan Country Representative visits South Sudan and DRC border as part of Ebola Preparedness and Response
Juba, 08 Sept 2014: The WHO Country Representative for South Sudan, Dr. Abdi Aden Mohamed, the Minister of Health Dr. Riek Gai Kok, the State Minister of Health for Western Equatoria State Hon. John Bono, Undersecretary of MoH and 2 members of the national parliamentary health committee have visited Yambio city, Western Equatoria state. On Sept 9, the team visited Nadapal, Gangura the border between South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of the Ebola Preparedness and Response.
All UN Personnel in Eritrea Briefed on UN Cares
From 2nd to 5th September 2014, Orientation sessions have been conducted on UN Cares by Mr. Dan Onyango-Maina, Regional Coordinator UN Cares in Asmara. UN Cares is the UN system-wide workplace programme on HIV that is aimed at providing comprehensive support to UN personnel and their dependents to respond to HIV.
28th ERC Meeting Ends-Experts endorse local strategies for an “all-out” effort to finish polio in Nigeria
Abuja 05 September, 2014 - The Chairman and members of the Expert Review Committee (ERC) on Polio eradication and Routine Immunization for Nigeria which comprises global and local experts on polio eradication on Wednesday, 3rd September, 2014 endorsed local innovations to launch an "all-out" effort to finish wild poliovirus (WPV) in Kano, the only state with on-going transmission, in order to end the fight against the paralyzing disease.

Uganda Launches Gender Based Violence Advocacy Pack
Kampala, 3rd September 2014:- The Minister of State for Health (Primary Health Care), Hon Sarah Opendi, has urged Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), UN Agencies and Government to unite and fight Gender Based Violence (GBV). She said this at a meeting held at Hotel African to launch the Gender Based Violence Advocacy Pack under the theme ‘Championing prevention and response to GBV”.
African Vaccination Week Launched in The Gambia
The African Vaccination Week (AVW) which is scheduled to be observed during the last week of April every year was launched by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and partners at the Atlantic Hotel in Banjul on 3rd September 2014.
The theme for this year 2014 was, “Vaccination a shared responsibility”, and its slogan was vaccinated communities; Healthy communities.
Ebola Virus Disease: WR visits Rivers Governor in Port Harcourt
Port Harcourt, 02 September 2014- The WHO country Representative in Nigeria, Dr Rui Vaz in company of Operations Officer, Mr Alieu Wadda, and the Incident Manager, Ebola Operations Centre, Dr Faisal paid a visit to the Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon Rotimi C. Amaechi and the Commissioner of health, Dr Sampson Parker, to discuss the response to the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the State.
