The 2014 Synchronized National Immunization Days (NIDs) against polio, currently taking place in 13 West and Central African countries, kicked off in the Gambia on the eve of the campaign at the Kanifing Municipal Council Grounds (KMC) in Sere Kunda (18th September 2014).  Two rounds of polio NIDs are slated for 19th -22nd September 2014 and 31st Oct. – 03rd Nov. 2014 respectively.
 

22 September 2014 ¦ GENEVA -Unless Ebola control measures in west Africa are enhanced quickly, experts from the WHO and Imperial College, London, predict numbers will continue to climb exponentially, and more than 20 000 people will have been infected by early November, according to a new article in the New England Journal of Medicine released 6 months after WHO was first notified of the outbreak in west Africa.

Harare, 18 Sept. 2014 :  WHO supported the Ministry of Health and Child Care to launch the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine demonstration programme in Zimbabwe. The HPV vaccine targets girls before they become sexually active in order to prevent acquisition of sexually transmitted infections, and HPV which causes cervical cancer. Under this programme, Zimbabwe will deliver vaccines to girls aged 10 years in the  2 districts of Marondera and Beitbridge.

September 18, 2014, Nairobi – The WHO Regional Director Dr Luis G Sambo has attributed the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in West Africa to weak health systems, negative traditional beliefs and practices, intense movement of infected people within countries and across borders.

He said the weak health infrastructure at local level had hampered the ability of governments and communities to cope with the complexity and severity of the outbreak. “Moreover, we are facing a disease for which we have neither medicine nor vaccine,” he said.

Abuja, 17th September, 2014 - His Excellency Kadré Désiré Ouedraogo, the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has re-affirmed that the  Commission is interested in expanding  collaboration with WHO in the sub-region given the exemplary role played by the Organization in containing the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West-Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
