Rwanda has organized from 07th to 09th October the Integrated Mother and Child Health Week for the second time this year. The first week was organized in March 2014. The launching ceremony took place in Musanze District, Northern Province on 07th October. The launching of the Week coincided with the launching of the 12+ Program targeting young girls between 10 and 12 years. The Guest of Honour of this ceremony was the Minister of State in charge of Public Health and Primary Health Care. Among other guests were the Executive Secretary of Northern Province, and the Mayor of Musanze District.

Only people who have been sick with Ebola virus disease and recovered from this traumatic experience can explain what it was like and what their needs were during the illness. That is why a group of 6 Ebola survivors were asked to play a critical role in a new training programme for health workers on Ebola care, which was established by WHO in consultation with the Ministry of Health and with support from USAID.

"When we got the results from Conakry confirming that Ebola had reached our place, we were scared,” says Dr Maurice Ony Beuvogui, the Director of the district hospital in Telimele, a Guinean town located some 270 kilometres north of the capital Conakry. “But we knew that we, health workers, have the responsibility to fight it.”

In the wake of the West African Ebola outbreak currently ongoing in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and in line with the 8 August 2014 declaration of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Ethiopia has heightened preparedness to prevent the spread of the disease to the country.

At the Island Clinic in Monrovia, Liberia the discharge of a patient who has recovered from Ebola virus disease inspires joy among all the health workers at the facility. Every life saved is another boost to morale.

“As we see fewer people dying, the health workers are becoming more confident about their work,” says Dr Atai Omoruto, a Ugandan doctor deployed to Liberia by WHO and is serving as officer in charge at the clinic.

NAIROBI, Kenya |30 September 2014 – A United Nations Inter Agency Task Force comprising WHO, UNDP, UNFPA, World Bank, UNICEF and UNAIDS launched a ground- breaking mission in Kenya today to support the country to effectively respond to the epidemic of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including cancers, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and heart diseases.

30 September 2014 -- As the number of patients with Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone surpassed 6500 with more than 3000 deaths, the United Nations is increasing the momentum to curb the spread of the disease.

Kampala, 30th September 2014:- The World Health Organization (WHO) with funding from SIDA donated material to be used in strengthening capacity for youth friendly service provision as well as HIV prevention in Uganda. This was done at the WHO country office premises.
