Protecting the future: annual review meeting of Ethiopia’s EPPR project

The Ethio-Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (EPPR) Project held its first Annual Review Meeting from 9 to 11 July 2025 in Bishoftu, Ethiopia. The review brought together high-level government officials, technical experts, UN representatives, and other partners committed to advancing Ethiopia’s pandemic preparedness through a unified One Health approach.

Ethiopia launches groundbreaking UN initiative to prevent child wasting

The Federal Ministry of Health, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Food Programme (WFP), officially launched the Joint UN Initiative for the Prevention of Wasting (JUNIPr) in Ethiopia. The initiative aims to accelerate national efforts to prevent child wasting—a severe and life-threatening form of malnutrition that affects more than 11% of Ethiopian children under five.

How WHO helped in Moyale city fight a Mpox outbreak

On 24 May 2025, Moyale Hospital reported a suspected case of Mpox in a 21-day-old female newborn presenting with generalized skin lesions and high-grade fever, resulting from exposure to her parents. Subsequent testing confirmed Mpox virus infection in five individuals aged from less than one month to 30 years. 

Ethiopia's Integrated Measles Campaign Reaches 18.5 Million Under-Five Children

Ethiopia has successfully completed its 2025 nationwide integrated measles campaign, reaching an impressive 18,570,244 children—99% of the targeted population. The ten-day campaign kicked off on 14 May 2025 across 12 regions, while Somali Region and Addis Ababa City Administration launched on 21 May and 26 May, respectively. The national launch event took place in Bishoftu, Oromia Region, led by the Ministry of Health in close collaboration with partners, community members, and political leaders.

Ethiopia has successfully concluded the second round of its nationwide novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) campaign, reaching more than 16.8 million children across ten regions. Led by the Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Rotary International, and other immunization partners, the campaign was conducted from 30 May to 2 June 2025.
