WHO Representative Dr Fabian Ndenzako briefs minister Modise ahead of World Health Assembly

The World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Botswana, Dr Fabian Ndenzako, held a high-level debriefing session with the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Stephen Modise, to discuss Botswana’s preparations for the upcoming World Health Assembly (WHA). The meeting comes shortly after the launch of Botswana’s National Health Insurance scheme, signaling the country’s commitment to strengthening its health system.

Dr Ndenzako emphasized the WHA as a critical platform for Botswana to advance its national and regional health priorities. He commended the country’s longstanding leadership in global health governance, including chairing previous Assemblies and successfully hosting the 73rd WHO Regional Committee for Africa. “As we await the final WHA agenda, our technical team remains available to support the Botswana delegation with any clarifications or inputs needed to ensure full preparedness,” said Dr Ndenzako.

He also conveyed warm greetings from Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the former WHO Regional Director for Africa and a proud Motswana. Dr Moeti expressed her desire to reconnect with Minister Modise and hopes to pay a courtesy call on His Excellency, the President, to personally thank him and the Government of Botswana for their unwavering support throughout her tenure. Dr Ndenzako further touched on global developments, including the United States’ declared intention to withdraw from WHO. While the formal process spans 12 months, he expressed hope for a reconsideration, stressing that “global health is stronger through unity and collective action.”

In response, Minister Modise reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to health systems strengthening, highlighting the importance of balancing curative and preventive healthcare. “As a Ministry, we are not only investing in curative solutions but also scaling up preventive strategies to reduce stress on families and promote healthier lifestyles. A healthy population drives economic growth and enjoys longer, more fulfilling lives,” he stated.

The Minister outlined Botswana’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for health innovation and investment. “We are laying the groundwork for vaccine production and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Infrastructure planning is underway, and we welcome collaboration and partnerships in these areas,” he added.
Regarding Botswana’s participation at the upcoming WHA, Minister Modise emphasized the importance of full engagement. “I intend to be present and visible. Our regional partners must see that Botswana remains committed and engaged. If there are ever any communication gaps, I am available to provide leadership and direction,” he assured.

He also acknowledged Botswana’s improved malaria status, despite a recent outbreak that occurred as the country assumed the Chairmanship of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA). He commended ALMA’s rapid support, which helped to quickly stabilize the situation.

On non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Minister Modise raised concerns about the growing burden of conditions such as cancer and diabetes, which are putting increasing pressure on the healthcare system. “While we have made tremendous strides in the HIV response, NCDs like diabetes are leading many to require dialysis, a costly intervention that is not a cure. Our focus must shift to prevention, early screening, and lifestyle change,” he said.

He called for continued technical assistance from WHO, particularly in strengthening the response to NCDs and enhancing overall health system resilience. “We are grateful for our partnership with WHO and look forward to continued collaboration in crafting evidence-based health policies,” he said. Minister Modise emphasized the importance of institutional memory and enduring partnerships, especially during transitions in government. “Regardless of who holds office, our relationships and the progress we’ve made in health must continue uninterrupted,” he concluded.
