The first round of National Immunization Days against poliomyelitis Successfully completed

The continuing spread of the Wild Polio Virus in West African remains a threat to the interruption of WPV transmission mid 2010. In an effort to respond to this situation, WHO Regional Office for Africa working with partners proposed three rounds of National Immunization Days (NIDs) within the region.

Sierra Leone is one of the 16 countries that should implement NIDs this year. The goal of this year’s NIDs is to interrupt wild polio virus transmission by June 2010. It is to be recalled that five rounds of NIDs was conducted last year in Sierra Leone and 12 cases of wild polio virus cases were detected since July 2009.
