Bissau–Within the framework of Guinea-Bissau’s all-hazards emergency preparedness, readiness, response and resilience efforts, the acting WHO Representative in Guinea-Bissau donated a consignment of medical kits intended to treat victims of a blast that triggered a devastating fire emergency with multiple casualties. The fire occurred in the city of Bafatá on 13 February 2026, resulting in 160 injuries and four deaths. Patients were initially admitted to the Regional Hospital of Bafatá, while 21 patients in more severe condition were referred to the Simão Mendes National Hospital in Bissau to receive specialized care.
The World Health Organization (WHO) received the request for assistance from the Ministry of Public Health on 19 February 2026 and was able to respond promptly within a week through a coordinated response involving the Regional Office, the Health Emergency Hub in Dakar and the Country Office. The consignment consisted of medical and surgical kits, including antibiotics, wound dressings and infusions, among other supplies. These are intended for the management of burns, the prevention of infections and pain control, contributing to reduced complications and improved clinical outcomes. WHO is also in the process of mobilizing Emergency Medical Teams to be deployed to Bissau to train health and care workers in acute care.
The impact of the incident has been deeply felt by the local community, with significant social and emotional repercussions.
The donation forms part of the actions envisaged under the national public health emergency preparedness and response strategy and reaffirms WHO’s commitment to continue supporting the Ministry of Public Health in strengthening the resilience of the national health system, through a coordinated, evidence-based response oriented towards safeguarding the right to health for the entire population of Guinea-Bissau.
