African Traditional Medicines day 2014

The Gambia has now joined the rest of the international community to commemorate African Traditional Medicines Day 2014 which is usually observed on 31st August every year.  This year’s event which had to be shifted to the 10th September 2014 because of other emerging activities was held at the Kanifing Municipality Council (KMC).

Gambia commemorates World Blood Donor Day 2014

Banjul 20 June 2014 - The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, WHO and partners joined the international  community to commemorate World Blood Donor Day 2014. The theme for this year, “Safe blood for saving mothers” focuses on raising people’s awareness about the critical need for safe products to be available to everyone, especially for women suffering from severe bleeding during delivery or after childbirth. 

UN supports Ebola preparedness in The Gambia

BANJUL, 17 June 2014 - The United Nation System in The Gambia through the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday presented an assortment of medical items and other supplies to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Banjul in support of national Ebola preparedness and response efforts.

World Malaria Day 2014

Every year World Malaria Day (WMD) is commemorated on 25th April and The Gambia joins the rest of the international community to mark this event. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOH&SW), WHO (UN) and partners all gathered in Basse, Upper River Region of the country to sensitize and educate the community on prevention, control and treatment of malaria.

African Vaccination Week Launched in The Gambia

The African Vaccination Week (AVW) which is scheduled to be observed during the last week of April every year was launched by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and partners at the Atlantic Hotel in Banjul on 3rd September 2014.
 
The theme for this year 2014 was, “Vaccination a shared responsibility”, and its slogan was vaccinated communities; Healthy communities.

The Gambia Successfully Completed 2nd round of National Immunization Days (NIDs) 201...

Polio with 950 vaccination teams covering a target population of 416740 for children 0 – 5 months. Thanks to the efforts of the national authorities and the support of the polio coalition being spearheaded by the World Health Organization. 

It will be recalled that the Minister for Health and Social Welfare Hon. Omar Sey spoke optimistically about the campaign during the launching of the 1st round (19th – 22nd September 2014), based on the country’s performance in attaining high coverage in similar campaigns.

The Gambia launches 2014 Synchronized National Immunization Days

The 2014 Synchronized National Immunization Days (NIDs) against polio, currently taking place in 13 West and Central African countries, kicked off in the Gambia on the eve of the campaign at the Kanifing Municipal Council Grounds (KMC) in Sere Kunda (18th September 2014).  Two rounds of polio NIDs are slated for 19th -22nd September 2014 and 31st Oct. – 03rd Nov. 2014 respectively.
