Gambia | WHO Honours National Tobacco Control Champions

October 2016 - The two winners from the Gambia of the prestigious World No-Tobacco Award for 2016 - Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Hon. Omar Sey and the Multi-sectoral Working Group for Tobacco Control – were recently presented with their Awards at a colorful ceremony held at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Headquarters in Banjul.

Gambia launches Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign

Banjul, 25 April 2016 - After intensive preparations, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and other partners has officially launched the much awaited seven-day nationwide measles –rubella vaccination, which ends on Monday, 1st May 2016.

The campaign, which is integrated with vitamin A supplementation and de-worming, is the first of its kind conducted in the Gambia as echoed by WHO and MoHSW officials at a recent press briefing held be-fore the official launch.

World Malaria Day 2015

Banjul, The Gambia, 1st September 2015 - Every year World Malaria Day (WMD) is commemorated on 25th April and the Gambia joined the rest of the international community to mark this event. As part of preparations to mark WMD 2015, a taskforce was formed comprising of Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOH&SW), WHO,UNICEF, Catholic Relieve Services (CRS), ActionAid The Gambia, Nyama (CBO), Bill Clinton Foundation and other partners working in health.

“Breast feeding, “Support mums to breastfeed anytime, anywhere”

World Breast feeding week was observed in The Gambia, from 1st to 7th August 2015. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOH&SW), through the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA), in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and other partners came up with activities to sensitize the public especially so, employers and their women employees on the importance attached to breastfeeding.

This year, WHO is encouraging people to “Support mums to breastfeed anytime, anywhere,” as all of society has a role to play in making our communities more breastfeeding-friendly.

The Gambia Commemorates World Tuberculosis Day 2016

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOH&SW) in the Gambia in collaboration with WHO and MRC joined the rest of the international Community to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day (WTBD) on the 24th March. The theme for this year was “Unite to End TB”.

As part of activities to mark this important day a Press briefing was organized for the media fraternity and attended by partners. The event was hosted by the National Leprosy and TB office in Kanifing.
