Abuja, 11 May 2017- Wary of the threats of increased incidence of malaria cases in the northeast region of Nigeria, the World Health Organization (WHO) is leaving no stone unturned in scaling up interventions in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states as the rainy season sets in. The three states are those mostly affected by insurgency, which has led to significant displacement of people and left the affected states’ health system and social infrastructure weakened. 

WHO-supported Severe Acute Malnutrition training comes at critical time

With an estimated 300,000 children in north-eastern Nigeria suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), health and nutrition specialists in three states have undertaken an intensive World Health Organization (WHO) training on how to treat SAM with medical complications. Currently, there is limited capacity to treat such cases in the region.

Abuja, 18 May 2017 - This week, stakeholders converged in Abuja from 15-16 May, 2017 to validate Nigeria’s draft National Strategic Health Development Plan Framework II (NSHDP II). The framework will guide government at both states and federal levels to develop specific plans that will feed into the overall Health Strategic Plan.

The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, in his address encouraged states to develop state-specific plans using NSHDP II framework as a guide to achieve coherence between local operational plans and the national strategic plan.

WHO and CDC honour health workers for making the ultimate sacrifice

Abuja, 24 May 2017 - The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control, (CDC) Foundation, have bestowed posthumous ‘Bob Keegan Polio Eradication Heroes Awards’ on two fallen polio heroes in Niger and Benue states. The Bob Keegan Polio Eradication Hero Award comprise of a plaque-certificate and cash donation of USD$2,000 to each of the awardees.
