Kenya Launches National Cancer Control Strategy 2017-2022

The government of Kenya has launched the National Cancer Control Strategy, 2017-2022. The launch was done at a well-coordinated media breakfast function which was presided over by Dr Jackson Kioko, Director of Medical Services, on behalf of Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr Cleopa Mailu.

Emergency Measles and Polio Campaign Launched

Nairobi, 29 April 2006 -- The Minister for Health today launched the Emergency Measles and Polio Campaign. The national launch took place in Pumwani District of Nairobi Province. Hon. Dr. Wilfred Machage, Assistant Minister for Medical Services represented the Minister for Health, Hon. Charity Ngilu.

WHO sustains its funding to Ministry of Health

JUNE 6, 2017 | WHO Kenya country office has  given a statement  to correct erroneous media reports that Kenya had suspended its funding to  Ministry of Health. In his statement, the WHO Kenya Country Representative, Dr Rudi Eggers said the report was incorrect and confirmed that  WHO had not suspended funding to the Ministry of Health. The erroneous report was based on an internal letter written by the Ministry of  Health  to urge counties to make returns for monies given by  the WHO for some activities including advocacy and surveillance of the Guinea Worm Disease .

Press briefing on Africa Malaria Day held Nairobi

22 April 2003 -- The Director of Medical Services for Kenya, Dr. Richard Muga, together with Roll Back Malaria partners, today briefed the media about the forthcoming Africa Malaria Day to be commemorated on 25 April 2003.

As part of the commemoration, the first progress report on malaria control and prevention in Africa will be officially launched.

Kenya Commemorates the First World Malaria Day

25 April 2008, Kenya -- Agoro Sare High School in Rachuonyo District of Nyanza Province was the venue for the national commemoration of the 1st World Malaria Day whose theme is “Malaria –a disease without borders”. The Minister for Public Health and Sanitation, Hon. Beth Mugo was the Chief Guest. She was accompanied by the Assistant Minister for Medical Services, Hon. Danson Mungatana, and the Permanent Secretary for Public Health and Sanitation, Dr. James Nyikal. 

Chikungunya – Kenya

On 28 May 2016, the Ministry of Health of Kenya notified WHO of an outbreak of Chikungunya in Mandera East sub-county.

The first reports of an increase in cases with febrile illness and joint pains occurred in May 2016. Samples were collected and shipped to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Arboviral Laboratory in Nairobi. On 16 May, KEMRI laboratory confirmed 7 of the 10 samples tested positive for Chikungunya virus. All samples tested negative for other arboviruses including: dengue, yellow fever and West Nile viruses.

Kenya Launches the Universal Access Report

Nairobi, 30 September 2010 -- There has been significant progress and positive development in increasing access to HIV/AIDS services. This was according to the latest progress report released in Nairobi on 28th September as part of the global launch of the report “Towards Universal Access”, also held in Geneva and Washington. The report by WHO, UNICEF and UNAIDS was the fourth annual report for tracking progress made in achieving the 2010 target of providing universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care.

World TB day observance in Kenya kicks off with a WHO donation of TB drugs

20 March 2002 --The World Health Organization to-day handed over approximately 15 tons of life-saving tuberculosis ( TB ) drugs to the Republic of Kenya. These drugs worth over $ 200,000 US ( Kshs. 16,785,852.72 ) have been made available through a global partnership initiative, the Global Drug Facility (GDF) that was started early last year.

The WHO Representative to Kenya, Dr. Peter Eriki who spoke at the handing over ceremony, commended Kenya for being among the first 16 countries to qualify for this support from the Global Drug Facility.

WHO Representative Hands Over Medicines - Kenya

Nairobi, 6 November 2007 -- The WHO Representative to Kenya, Dr. David Okello handed over to the new Minister for Health, Hon. Paul Sang medicines for Mass Drug Administration (MDA) for Lymphatic Filariasis. The Permanent Secretary of Health, Dr. Hezron Nyangito and the Director of Medical Services, Dr. James Nyikal accompanied the Minister for Health at the ceremony which took place in the compound of the Ministry of Health Headquarters, Afya House. The drugs aimed at treating 1.9 million people in Coast Province are valued at Kenya shillings 1.5 million. Dr.
