Charting Zambia’s digital health future

Charting Zambia’s digital health future

In a vibrant gathering at Urban Bliss Hotel in Kabwe, 31 passionate minds came together from 9 to 11 September 2025 to shape the future of digital health in Zambia. The Digital Health Blueprint Convergence Workshop, hosted by the Ministry of Health with support from WHO, was more than just a meeting, it was a movement.

With representatives from Ministry of Health, Zambia National Public Health Institute, World Health Organization, the World Bank, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United Nations Children's Fund , Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority, Zambia Telecommunications Company Limited, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Center for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia, Association for Public Health Laboratories  and others, the workshop was a pot full of ideas, expertise, and commitment. The goal? To co-create a national digital health blueprint that reflects Zambia’s vision and accelerates the country’s digital transformation in health.

The workshop opened with strong momentum as Mr. Andrew Kashoka, Director of ICT at the MOH, emphasized interoperability, governance, and local ownership. Participants engaged in group discussions that helped shape a shared national vision and set the foundation for an ambitious yet practical digital health blueprint.

Stakeholders from WHO, CDC, UNICEF, and others contributed key insights that supported the development of milestones aligned with Zambia’s Digital Health Strategy. Collaboration across teams generated concrete ideas on infrastructure, sustainability, and data exchange, strengthening the blueprint structure. Participants aligned proposed milestones with national priorities, resulting in a clear, consensus-driven roadmap for implementation.

Major outcomes included a shared national vision, a comprehensive milestone framework, and a theory of change model to guide implementation and evaluation. Next steps include consolidating inputs, drafting the blueprint, organizing a validation workshop, and developing a robust monitoring and evaluation framework. Zambia’s digital health future is being built collaboratively—step by step.

In closing, Ms. Miriam Musama, Assistant Director of ICT at the MOH, encouraged continued engagement through the Digital Health Technical Working Group, reinforcing that digital transformation is a collective effort.
