Hosting the world, championing health: Seychelles welcomes Africa’s first FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup

Victoria – Seychelles is hosting the first-ever FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup to be held in Africa. The 2025 event, which runs from 1 – 11 May, has potentially far-reaching impacts.

The prestigious tournament offers more than just captivating sport. The Government of Seychelles, World Health Organization (WHO) and FIFA are joining forces to leverage this unique global platform to promote healthier lifestyles and tackle some of the most pressing health challenges of our time.

Building on the established and impactful collaboration between FIFA and WHO, this initiative will harness the tournament's global reach to raise awareness around non-communicable diseases, the persistent threat of communicable diseases, and the growing prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors across Africa and beyond.

“This is more than a sporting event, it’s a movement for health,” said Dr Rex Mpazanje, WHO Representative in Seychelles. “The Beach Soccer World Cup offers a rare opportunity to connect with people through the universal language of sport. Together with FIFA and the Government of Seychelles, we are delivering a message: that health matters, and we all have a role to play in protecting it.”

The campaign comes at a crucial time for the continent, where non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and cancers represent a significant and growing health burden. In Seychelles, findings from the National Survey of Non-communicable Diseases 2023, conducted by the Ministry of Health, reveal that nearly 1 in 5 adults aged 35-74 is living with diabetes, while among those aged 55-74, respectively 4 percent and 6 percent have self-reported having had a stroke or a history of cancer. Underscoring the urgency, the initiative will highlight the life-changing benefits of regular physical activity, amplifying the ongoing ‘Stop Obesity national campaign’ launched by the President of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan in October 2023.

In addition to promoting active lifestyles – a cornerstone in preventing and managing chronic diseases, the campaign will also address other crucial health areas, including promoting concussion awareness, ensuring food safety for all, and encouraging safer sexual practices.

“We are working with the Ministry of Health, communities and media to ensure that these health messages reach every corner of society, ensuring that the impact resonates long after the final match,” Dr Mpazanje emphasized.

Seychelles' leadership in this initiative to promote health during the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2025 reflects its broader commitment to public health and global well-being. In October 2024, the country pledged US$ 50,000 to WHO’s Investment Round, a tangible expression of its dedication to supporting health systems both locally and globally.

The FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2025 is set to be a celebration of sport, resilience and unity. And with the added power of a public health campaign, it promises to leave a legacy of well-being across the region.
