Ethiopia Launches National Action Plan for Health Security and One Health Strategic Plan
Ethiopia has officially launched the National Action Plan for Health Security (2024/25–2028/29) and the National One Health Strategic Plan (2025–2029). The high-level event, held in Addis Ababa and supported by the World Health Organization and other parteners, brought together senior government officials, representatives from multiple sectors, and development partners.
Opening the ceremony, Her Excellency, the Minister of Health, emphasized that the two frameworks mark a major milestone in Ethiopia’s efforts to build a resilient and inclusive system that protects the health of all citizens. She highlighted that both plans are anchored in the International Health Regulations (2005) and require the active participation of all sectors through coordinated implementation and accountability.
The One Health Strategic Plan reinforces the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health—underscoring that health security is a shared responsibility across all sectors and communities.
In his remarks, Professor Francis Chisaka Kasolo, WHO Representative (a.i.) to Ethiopia, the African Union, and UNECA, congratulated the Government for its leadership and reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to continue providing technical support in implementing the two frameworks.
“These strategies embody a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, aligning with WHO’s Triple Billion targets. WHO stands ready to continue walking this journey with Ethiopia—side by side with government and communities—to strengthen preparedness, protect lives, and build a healthier, safer future for all,” said Professor Kasolo.
