Cameroonian Honour: Dr Rebecca Moeti awarded for her leadership in public health across the Africa continent during 53rd National Day celebration in South Africa.

Pretoria, South Africa – 20 May 2025 – On the occasion of the 53rd National Day of the Republic of Cameroon, Dr Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa (2015-2024) was awarded the title of Officer of the National Order of Valour, one of the highest distinctions bestowed by the Government of Cameroon.                                                                                 
The medal was presented by H.E. Mr Solomon Azoh-Mbi, High Commissioner of Cameroon to South Africa, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cameroon, in recognition of Dr Moeti’s exceptional leadership and long-standing commitment to strengthening health systems across the African continent.                                                                                                             
Throughout her decade of service as Regional Director, Dr Moeti has played a pivotal role in improving health outcomes, leading coordinated responses to major public health emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and supporting African countries in tackling endemic diseases. Cameroon, in particular, acknowledged her and the World Health Organization’s vital support in strengthening national health policies and enhancing disease response mechanisms.
The award ceremony took place at CT Hotel in Pretoria in the presence of Mr Marlon Geswint, a senior official representing the Honourable Mr Enoch Godongwana, Minister of Finance and official representative of the Government of South Africa, Dr Sanji Monageng, High Commissioner of Botswana in South Africa, and Ms Shenaaz El-Halabi, the WHO Representative. The event also welcomed members of the diplomatic corps, international agencies, and development partners. It concluded with a ceremonial toast celebrating Cameroon’s national unity and the enduring partnerships between Cameroon, South Africa, and the global health community
