WHO confirms Zika virus strain imported from the Americas to Cabo Verde

Sequencing of the virus in Cabo Verde by Institut Pasteur, Dakar confirms that the Zika virus currently circulating in Cabo Verde is the same as the one circulating in the Americas - the Asian type- and was most likely imported from Brazil. This is the first time that the Zika strain responsible for the outbreaks linked to neurological disorders and microcephaly has been detected in Africa.

Fogo volcanic eruption 2014-2015 : From the onset to the post-disaster assessment – ...

On the 23rd of November 2014 a volcanic eruption occurred on the island of Fogo in the archipelago of Cabo Verde. During the early hours of the eruption, critical infra-structure such as roads and telecommunications where immediately destroyed by a massive torrent of lava flow that also covered a substantial area of arable land. However, considering the slow movement of magma, the population had sufficient time to be evacuated out of the affected area. 

World AIDS Day activities

To mark World Aids Day 2015, the Ministry of Health, through the CCS-AIDS (Coordinating Committee for the Combat against AIDS), held the main event of the day at the National Assembly in order to discuss the HIV –AIDS pandemic both on the global level and national level.

Cabo Verde officially declared “polio free”

Praia 02 December 2016 - On the 24th of November 2016, Cabo Verde was officially declared free of Poliomyelitis.

Following the declaration made in by the ARCC (Africa Regional Certification Commission for Polio Eradication), the Minister of Health and Social Security of Cabo Verde, Dr. Arlindo do Rosário, organized  a press conference on the 2nd of December  to share this important achievement with the whole nation.
