Respiratory virus surveillance in the WHO African Region Epidemiological Week 4, 20 - 26 January 2025

Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Togo, United Republic of Tanzania, and Zambia. During week 4, 1,342 specimens were collected and 1,308 were tested for influenza.

In Epiweek 4, 191 specimens tested positive for influenza virus (positivity of 14.6%), of which 124 specimens were Influenza A, and 67 specimens were Influenza B. The following influenza viruses were identified: Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 (n = 53), Influenza A (H3) (n = 70), Influenza A (subtyping not performed) (n = 1), Influenza B (lineage not determined) (n = 4), and Influenza B (Victoria) (n = 63).

SARS-CoV-2 
In Epiweek 4, of the 1,279 specimens processed by 19 laboratories in the African Region, a total of 101 specimens tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (positivity of 7.9%).

Cumulatively from weeks 1 to 4, the WHO AFR influenza laboratory network has tested 4,792 sentinel surveillance specimens for SARS-CoV-2, of which 547 were positive for SARS-CoV-2 (cumulative positivity rate 11.4%).
