The African Mayors Dialogue aims at empowering local government leaders providing them with a platform for exchange and contribution to the global governance agenda and facilitating an enabling space for presenting their cities’ contexts and opportunities on Urban Governance for Health and Wellbeing.

Good local governance is critical for achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Discussions will contribute to catalyze actions to accelerate progress towards the achievement of the targets of SDG3 and SDG11, inspiring and promoting good governance, health and wellbeing for all and sustainable cities and communities.

The Healthy Cities movement promoted by WHO is widely considered as a key approach to promote the health and wellbeing of individuals and their

communities in urban settings through innovation and multisectoral change.

The Geneva Charter for Wellbeing underlines the urgency of creating sustainable “well-being societies”, committed to achieving equitable health now and for future generations without breaching ecological limits.

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed people’s lives and it is shaping a new way to engage communities to find solutions to common problems that affect populations widely, including participatory approaches to urban governance. The pandemic represents a unique opportunity to generate innovative solutions to promote long-term urban resilience to health risks and crises.
