Reaching the unreached with COVID-19 lifesaving vaccination

Close to 1.3 million people, from previously inaccessible areas of Tigray were reached with lifesaving COVID-19 vaccination following a two-phase campaign.

The first round of the vaccination campaign, which was conducted in January 2023 benefited more than 113,000 people in the towns of Wukro, AbiAdi, Adigrat, Maichew and Mehoni towns. Conducted in the months of February and March 2023, the second round of the campaign, on the other hand, benefited more than 1.2 million people from 64 previously inaccessible woredas of the region.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently conducted a Joint Operational Review (JOR) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from March 27th to March 31st, 2023. The review aimed to assess WHO's humanitarian response to northern Ethiopia and drought emergencies, identify gaps, challenges, and best practices, and integrate them into the next phase of the response and recovery plans.

22 March 2023 – As needs grow and refugees continue to arrive, UN agencies and partner organizations today appealed for $116 million to provide life-saving assistance to Somali refugees seeking safety in an extremely remote area of Ethiopia’s Somali region. 

Since hostilities erupted last month in the city of Laascaanood, in the Sool region, Somalia , hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced within Somalia and close to 100,000 are estimated to have crossed the border into Ethiopia to escape violence.

On 29 and 30 January 2023, government health officials and partners came together in Jimma Zone, Oromia Region, to commemorate World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day in a two-day event that included an event opening ceremony, visit to NTD, molecular and drug laboratories of Jimma University, a field trip to two woredas of Jimma Zone to observe preventive activities and NTD case management, and a panel discussion.
