President Hichilema honours Dr Tedros, Dr Kaseya for advancing health equity

His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, conferred on Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) the Order of the Eagle of Zambia – 3rd Division.

The special ceremony took place at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, during the 75th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa (RC75).

Speaking through his Principal Private Secretary, Bradford Machila, President Hichilema said the award was given “in recognition of your service to humanity.”

President Hichilema praised Dr. Tedros, the first African to lead WHO, for his strong and caring leadership. He said Dr. Tedros helped guide the world through the COVID-19 pandemic and made sure that poorer countries were not left behind in getting vaccines.

“Your leadership has brought hope and fairness to global health,” the President said. “You have reminded the world that health is a right for everyone, no matter where they live.”

Dr. Tedros was also recognized for helping countries prepare for emergencies and for pushing for better healthcare systems that include everyone.

On Dr. Jean Kaseya, the President said he has helped make Africa CDC a strong and trusted health organisation. Under his leadership, Africa CDC took quick action during health emergencies like Mpox and worked to make vaccines and medicines in Africa.

“You have helped protect millions of lives,” the President said. “Your work has made Africa safer and stronger.”

The Order of the Eagle of Zambia – 3rd Division is a rare and prestigious honour, reserved for individuals who have rendered exceptional service to humanity. The recognition of Dr. Tedros and Dr. Kaseya underscores Zambia’s deep appreciation for their work in improving health across Africa.
